Opened in 1877,
Bisbee’s Queen Mine was one of
the richest copper mines in history. The mine eventually
closed when Phelps Dodge ceased mining operations in Bisbee in the
mid 1970’s. Nearly 100 years after its initial opening, the Queen Mine
opened as a tour for visitors in 1976.
Approximately 50,000 people a year visit the Queen Mine
to
Board the
train and descend into the mine
to experience what it was like work
underground where temperatures are 47 degrees year-round. Tours are conducted by miners,
many
of
whom
worked in the nearby
mines and
share
with
you
their
own personal experiences.
