HISTORY
AND FACTS
I n 1901, T. Carl Schnebly arrived
in present
day, Sedona with his wife and two
children, Ellsworth and Pearl. Carl soon started
one of the first fruit orchards in the area along with a little store to
sell his produce. Eventually it would become the social center of the community and a rest
stop for the early westerners enroute to Flagstaff from Jerome.
The
Schnebly family realized that one of the biggest issues the town faced was
that it
took too long to get the mail, which had to come from Flagstaff. So in 1902, Carl sent off for a postal permit. His first choice
for
a
name was Schnebly Station. When
he
was
notified that the name was too long he used his wife's name, Sedona,
instead. It was
approved by postal officials on June 26, 1902, where upon Carl Schnebly became
the first
postmaster of Sedona.
